Betty Zanelli è un’artista che lavora principalmente con la fotografia e l’installazione.

Alla fine degli anni ’80 si è trasferita a New York, città in cui ha vissuto per vari anni.
Qui ha sviluppato una ricerca artistica proteiforme che va dall’installazione alla fotografia e che caratterizza a tutt'oggi il suo lavoro.

Negli anni '90 ha partecipato al Project Studio Space Program del P.S.122 di New York ottenendo l’art residency per due anni, ha collaborato con la casa editrice Scholastic Inc., ha esposto a Los Angeles e allo Snug Harbor Museum di New York con l'installazione Symphony of the Lost Ideal.

Altre importanti mostre personali e collettive sono state a New York, (Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Snug Harbor Museum, P.S.122 Gallery, MMC Gallery, NYU Bobst Library, Knitting Factory), a Los Angeles (Otis/Parsons Gallery), a Berlino (Institut für Alles Mögliche, Buuro für Bestimmte Dinge, CAOC Gallery), a Londra (Art Works Space), a Roma, Bologna e in altre città italiane (eLaSTiCo, Spazio Lavi, Arco di Rab, L'Ariete Arte Contemporanea, Il Graffio, Il Campo delle Fragole, Studio Mascarella, H2O Art Space, Natural-Camera, Due Punti Lab).

Dal 2000 privilegia la fotografia e la stampa digitale, mezzo con cui indaga l’iconografia popolare e la cultura pop. 

Il suo lavoro più recente ha come oggetto i luoghi deputati al divertimento, Luna Park, giostre e attrazioni per bambini, ricerca approfondita attraverso i suoi viaggi, come nel caso dello Spreepark di Berlino, ex Kulturpark della DDR.

Vive attualmente a Bologna, Italia,  dove è nata.
Diplomata in Pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, Betty Zanelli  è docente di Fashion Design presso lo stesso Istituto.

Betty Zanelli is an artist working with photography, digital painting and installation.

Following her first solo show at P.S. 122 Gallery in New York and at Studio Mascarella in Bologna, Betty Zanelli moved to New York City where she lived for several years.
In New York she worked in a variety of media and genres, including painting, photography and installation art, often incorporating found objects such as violin cases, violins, music sheets, worn-out fabrics, and objects associated with popular and religious culture.

Between 1991 and 1995 Zanelli participated in the P.S. 122 Project Studio Space Program, winning the art residency for two years; she showed in LA and in New York at the Snug Harbor Museum.
Zanelli participated in many more one-person and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad: in New York, NY (Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Snug Harbor Museum, P.S.122 Gallery, MMC Gallery, Marymount College, New York, NY, Knitting Factory, ); Los Angeles (Otis/Parsons Gallery); Berlin (Büro für Bestimmte Dinge, Institut für Alles Mögliche, Galerie + Edition Caoc, Berlin); London (Art Work Space); Rome and Bologna (eLaSTiCo, Spazio Lavì, L'Ariete Arte Contemporanea, Arco di Rab, Il Graffio, Il Campo delle Fragole, Studio Mascarella, H2O Art Space, Natural-Camera, Due Punti Lab).

Since the year 2000, Betty Zanelli has focused on the use of photography and digital printing in her work, media she uses to investigate popular iconography and pop culture. She continues traveling to further her own research on Luna Parks, places for entertainment, amusement parks, roundabouts, rides and attractions for children, as for the recent research on the Berlin Spreepark , the former DDR Kulturpark.
Back to Europe, Zanelli has settled back in Bologna, Italy, where she was born.
A graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna - where she studied drawing, painting and photography - Betty Zanelli is currently holding a professorship at that Institution.

Betty Zanelli ist eine Künstlerin, die hauptsächlich im Bereich der Installation und Photografie tätig ist.

Am Ende der 80er Jahre zog sie nach New York, wo sie auch viele Jahre lang gelebt hat. Hier absolvierte sie ihre künstlerische Forschung, die zwischen den Themengebieten von Fotografie und Installation angesiedelt ist und die bis dato ihre Arbeit prägte.

In den 90er hat sie an dem Project Studio Space Program von P.S. 122, New York teilgenommen, wodurch sie in der Stadt zu einer angesehenen Künstlerin wurde. Infolgedessen hat sie mit dem Verlag Scholastic Inc. (Los Angeles) kooperiert und ebenfalls in im New Yorker Snug Harbor Museum ihr Werk „Symphony oft he Lost Deal“ ausgestellt.

Weitere besondere Individuell- und Kollektiv-Ausstellungen hielt sie in New York (Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Snug Harbor Museum, P.S. 122 Gallery, MMC Gallery, NYU Boost Library, Knitting Factory), in Los Angeles (Otos/Parsons Gallery), in Berlin (Institut für Alles Mögliche, Büro für Bestimmte Dinge, CAOC Gallery), in London (Art Works Space) und in Rom, sowie Bologna ab. Seit dem Jahr 2000 bevorzugt sie die Fotographie und die digitale Wiedergabe, mit der sie die Volksikonographie und die Popkultur erforscht.

Ihre letzte Arbeit beschäftigte sich mit Orten des Vergnügens als Objekt. Dazu gehörten zum Beispiel Vergnügungsparks oder jegliche Arten von Kinderspielzeug. Das Hauptaugenmerk ihres Werks liegt auf dem Berliner Spreewald, der damals als Kulturpark in Zeiten der DDR genutzt worden ist.

Derzeit wohnt sie in ihrer Geburtsstadt Bologna. Hier hat sie damals an der Kunsthochschule ihre Ausbildung in Malerei abgeschlossen, in der sie momentan auch als Professorin von Fashion Design lehrt.
